What does facility impact mean?
Facility impact refers to the environmental footprint associated with the manufacturing of your products. This includes factors such as electricity, heat and water consumption from facilities.
How does Root calculate facility impacts?
We use enriched ecoinvent data for utility impacts, which allows us to offer users a more detailed and flexible way to calculate utility impacts. Once utility data is uploaded for a facility, we automatically calculate the environmental and carbon impact of the facility, as well as the processing and manufacturing impacts of the products.
We do this by aligning the utility contract's timeframe with the purchase and sales orders, which helps us determine which products have passed through the facility. We then use mass allocation to suggest a utility allocation per facility per product, enabling automated calculation for processing and manufacturing per product.
To do this, the critical information we need for each supplier is:
Information on electricity usage for each facility, including the energy source.
The heat consumption of each facility.
The water consumption of each facility.
For more details on how to upload this data onto the platform, see the facilities article.
Where can I see the impact of facility on my products?
The facility impact dashboard provides in-depth information on the impact of the facilities used to produce your products.
Refer to the facility impact dashboard article for more information and guidance on how to interpret this dashboard.
FAQ
What data do I need to upload to calculate facility impacts?
You need to upload data about the suppliers used to produce your products in the purchase and sales orders, materials in your products by uploading your product’s BOMs in the product chapter, and information about the electricity, heat, and water consumed in your facilities.
What if I don't have any information about electricity, heat, and water for my suppliers?
If you lack information about your suppliers' electricity, heat, and water usage, you can choose to exclude this facility from the impact assessment for the current year. In the meantime, start contacting your suppliers to collect this information for the following year. As long as you are transparent about the data gaps, it will not affect the overall accuracy of your calculations.
How does Root match my data with impact references?
Root uses the ecoinvent database to match your data with impact values. These impact values are then applied to your facilities to calculate their environmental footprint.
