What is a proxy?

A proxy is used when the same Bill of Materials (BOM) is applied to similar products.

If you lack primary data for all products, you can simplify the BOM upload process by using proxy data for products with similar materials or components. For example, a T-shirt in different colours or sizes would be a proxy.

Using proxy data in 4 simple steps

To use the proxy functionality:

  1. Go onto the products chapter of the platform.

  2. Click the 'Add Proxy' button.

  3. Select the products for which you would like to use a proxy BOM, specify the product whose BOM you want to use as the proxy, and provide any necessary information about the weight to ensure accurate LCA calculations.

  4. Once you've filled in the details, click 'Add Proxy' to complete the process.

FAQ

How can you tell if a product uses proxy or primary data on Root's platform?

On the products chapter, you can see whether the product uses primary data (source) or proxy data (proxy) in the' Relations' column. The screenshot below is an example.

How can you see which products use proxy data for each source product on the platform?

Follow these steps

  1. Go onto the products chapter of the platform.

  2. Click on a product with 'Source' in the Relations column (see the screenshot above).

  3. You will be navigated to the product's BOM. Click on the 'Details' view.

  4. Under the Relations column, you can see which products use the BOM as proxy data.

Please see the screenshot below as an example. In this example, you can see that the product 'Drink 4' is using primary data and is being used as proxy data for 81 other products in the company's product portfolio.
